Answer: Find the total number of the "i" letters in each dictionary entry (based on Card #1). This also includes the "i" letters in the words being defined. Write them down beside each entry. Then, arrange the four numbers according to the order of the defined words on the torn page. Droil (There are 3 "i" letters in the entry for Droil, including the word "Droil"), Hoggerel (0 "i" letters), Oxgang (5), Xylography (6). The numbers 3,0,5,6 form the code for opening the safe.


When the word definitions are constructed, they say:

DROIL, v. i. To work sluggishly or slowly; to plod.  First entry __     (The number of "i" letters in this dictionary entry is 3.)

HOGGEREL, n. A sheep of the second year. A two year old ewe. Second entry _0_        (The number of "i" letters in this dictionary entry is 0.)

OXGANG, n. In ancient laws, as much land as an ox can plow in a year ; said to be fifteen acres, or as others alledge, twenty acres.  Third entry __        (The number of "i" letters in this dictionary entry is 5.)

XYLOGRAPHY, n. Wood-engraving  ; the act or art of cutting figures in wood, in representation of natural objects.   Fourth entry __       (The number of "i" letters in this dictionary entry is 6.)
